The Value of Cosmetics

by Wayne Garth

When a friend I ran into on school campus said that in one of her classes they were doing experiments on animals I just about threw up. Are you serious I yelled at her! Are we not more advanced than that?

The first point that I would like to touch on is what exactly is animal testing , is the English dictionary states that animal testing is: the containment of animals for the use of test products on.

When we test on animals it's quite obvious the animal has no choice, in fact many animals are raised for this purpose alone. It seems weird to me that we test on animals so we can live better somehow. I don't consider myself to have the same gene pool as a mink, rat, or what ever other animal they deep appropriate to test on so why test on animals in the first place, are they really going to have the same reaction to products as I would?

Animal testing is a big issue for people have debating this issue since the 70's, which is why I was so shocked I guess because I thought we had revolutionized from killing animals for research and found other ways to test. Organic Chemistry comes to mind-

Various products have different kind of chemicals that make up that product, are we saying that if we test a product , on animals that this reaction will have the same effect as it will on me?

Ok so I should lighten up a bit on the animal testing thing...well it still seems illogical to use animals for product testing, but I do still purchase many cosmetics and plan do to so as long as I keep getting those zits, or wanting to have a little color mid-winter.

Some think animal testing is ok however I believe animal testing is very wrong. I know we are smarter than sacrificing animals to get important information that helps humans live a more comfortable lifestyle. Think of a sick, deformed animal the next time you use a sweet smelling perfume, or rich lathering shampoo that animal tests and ask yourself it is really worth it.
